INTEGRATION, PROTECTIONISM, NATIONALISM
September 25 – 26, 2026, Dryanovo
The Centre for Economic and Historical Research (CEHR) and the Historical Museum – Dryanovo invite you to participate in a scientific conference on the topic “Integration, protectionism, nationalism”, which will be held on September 25 and 26, 2026 in Dryanovo.
The history of economic development has been marked by fluctuations between processes of economic integration and tendencies toward protectionism and national economic isolation. In different historical periods, countries and societies have sought a balance between openness to foreign markets and the desire to protect national production and economic interests. These processes are closely connected with the development of nation-states, the formation of economic policies, and changes in international economic relations. Integration processes are often regarded as drivers of economic growth, trade expansion, and technological exchange. At the same time, however, they may also provoke reactions in the form of protectionist policies, economic nationalism, and attempts to limit external influence. From a historical perspective, these phenomena have had a significant impact on economic structures, socio-economic relations, and the development of individual regions and countries. The organizers of the Annual Scientific Conference of the Centre for Economic History Research (CEHR) invite scholars studying economic history to analyze the interaction between integration, protectionism, and nationalism and their significance for economic development in different historical periods.
The importance of these processes for economic development may be manifested in various aspects, including:
- regional economic development and economic relations over time;
- economic integration and the creation of supranational economic spaces;
- protectionist policies – tariffs, quotas, and trade restrictions;
- economic nationalism and the protection of national production;
- changes in international trade and economic relations;
- the role of the state in regulating economic processes;
- the impact on regional development and economic inequalities;
- the social and political consequences of integration and protectionist policies;
- national and/or supranational economic ideas.
The discussions during the conference will focus on several main areas, including but not limited to:
- regional trade and economic contacts in the period preceding the emergence of nation-states and modern economic integration;
- economic integration in historical perspective;
- protectionism and trade policy;
- economic nationalism and the formation of national markets;
- regional economic relations and cross-border trade;
- the role of the state in economic integration and protectionism;
- integration processes and regional development;
- economic actors, institutions, and economic policies under conditions of integration and protectionism;
- the transfer of economic ideas and/or efforts to preserve economic and cultural distinctiveness.
The conference is open to participation of historians, economists, lawyers, sociologists, etc. You can participate with a report lasting up to 15 minutes. Attendance at the conference and oral presentation of the report is mandatory due to review procedure and the subsequent publication. The conference reports, processed as scientific articles, will be proposed for printing in volume 11 of “Proceedings of the CEHR”. The publication of the articles depends on the result of their double anonymous review. In order to meet the requirements of the world’s scientific databases, your text must be formatted according to the following technical parameters:
- The text of the article proposed for publication must be up to 27,000 characters with spaces;
- It must have an abstract of 300–500 words in English, placed immediately after the title, which must also be translated into English;
- After the abstract, the keywords in the text must be written in English;
- The JEL classification must be indicated. For details, see here тук
- Photos, tables, diagrams and schemes (if any) must be placed in the correct place in the text, be indicated with consecutive numbering and have annotating texts;
- Archival materials should be cited in footnotes;
- Citation of sources and literature should be in accordance with the so-called Harvard system (Harvard short reference system). For details, see here тук
- When citing literature, transliteration of the names of the authors from Cyrillic to Latin according to the Streamlined system should be applied. For details, see here тук
- When citing literature, the titles of publications in Cyrillic are translated into English, then in square brackets they are also indicated in the original.
